The University of Leicester have their own app for students, it allows them to access Blackboard, find a PC, and check information with the library. This is where we will be targeting ours differently. We want to create a app that is somewhat like a pocket version of Blackboard, rather than logging in online and then navigating through many pages until you reach the information you need we will present it all through a singular app with different sections.

  • Maps
  • Timetables
  • Email
  • Announcements
  • Grades

what the Leicester app features:

Google maps the main competitor in the world of online maps. As we will only be including a map of  campus, the detail and information needed to make a map such as Google Maps to run will not be necessary.

The icons and logos for different destinations and meanings are known by many which will give us a great starting point for how we will design our buttons and icons.

Through researching into popular educational apps I can gain vital information on what competitive apps include and how they are designed successfully. Also current apps that are being used can offer inspiration, but on the other hand I can find out what they are lacking thus improving our product.

Todo is an app that costs £2.99 and offers users the possibility to create lists of tasks they need to complete. This is useful to see how the interface works as we would like to include a calendar/ task list within our app.

The layout is simple and clean with flat images resulting in it being easily understood and navigated.

Concept

We have come up with the concept to design an app to be used by universities and in particular Lincoln School of Media. The app will act as a lite version of BlackBoard, allowing students and lecturers quick and easy access to important things like timetables, maps, email and announcements.

We discovered there is a need for this as many people find it hard to access the information as they are normally quite hidden on blackboard through many different links and folders. We aim to show the important information in an easy to understand and accessible way.
